Building a Special Needs Community in Rockaway: How Lennon’s House Is Creating a Supportive Tribe
For families raising a child with special needs in the Rockaway area, the journey often feels isolating. As these children grow into young adults, the need for community becomes even more critical. At Lennon’s House, we understand this deeply because we’ve lived it. Our founder, D. Erica Phillips, created our organization with a clear vision: to build more than just a residential service—to create a true special needs community where young adults with different abilities can thrive.
The Need for Community in Morris County
Morris County, New Jersey is home to approximately 4,500 adults with developmental disabilities, according to recent state estimates. While there are some programs available, many families find themselves navigating a fragmented system of care once their children age out of school-based services at 21.
In Rockaway specifically, options have historically been limited, with many families having to travel to larger towns for social and recreational opportunities. This gap is exactly what drove us to establish Lennon’s House as a cornerstone of the local special needs community.
Meet Lennon: The Heart Behind Our Mission
At the center of our community is Lennon, a vibrant 20-year-old with a sharp wit, great sense of humor, and an impressive collection of equestrian medals. Lennon has CDK13, a rare genetic syndrome that means he will always need supportive living arrangements.
Like many young adults with special needs in the Rockaway area, Lennon deserves opportunities to:
- Form meaningful friendships with peers
- Engage in enriching recreational activities
- Develop life skills in a supportive environment
- Participate fully in the community around him
This isn’t just about providing care—it’s about creating connection and belonging, something every human needs regardless of ability.
Creating Our Tribe: The Lennon’s House Approach
What makes the special needs community at Lennon’s House unique is our “tribe” mentality. We believe in the power of connection—not just for our residents, but for their families as well.
Our approach includes:
Person-Centered Programming
At Lennon’s House, we recognize that each member of our community has unique interests, strengths, and needs. Our programming is built around the individual, not a one-size-fits-all model.
“We need to give more to our special needs community, all of these people need and deserve the opportunity to have enriching life experiences,” says Erica Phillips, who brings over 30 years of experience working with individuals with special needs.
Local Community Integration
Rockaway offers many hidden gems for community integration. Our program regularly visits local businesses, parks, and events, including:
- Rockaway Townsquare Mall for community outings
- Parks like Hedden County Park for outdoor recreation
- Local restaurants that have welcomed our group with open arms
- Community events where our members can volunteer and contribute
Family Support Network
Parents of adults with special needs often experience their own form of isolation. Our community extends to families, offering support groups, resources, and a place to share both challenges and celebrations with others who truly understand.
Special Needs Recreation Programs: Building Skills Through Fun
Recreation isn’t just about entertainment—it’s essential for development, health, and quality of life. Lennon’s House has developed special needs recreation programs that address multiple aspects of wellbeing:
Physical Activities
Our Special Olympics team, led by Kim Tackett with 38 years of experience, provides training in various sports. Members like Lennon have found joy and accomplishment through activities tailored to their abilities.
Creative Expression
From art projects to music sessions, our creative programming helps community members express themselves in new ways. These activities often reveal talents and interests that might otherwise go undiscovered.
Social Skills Development
Every activity at Lennon’s House is designed with socialization in mind. Whether it’s a group game or a community outing, we create opportunities for meaningful interaction and friendship building.
The Future of Special Needs Community Support in Rockaway
As we continue growing our tribe, Lennon’s House envisions becoming a comprehensive resource for the Rockaway special needs community. Our future plans include:
- Expanding residential options for adults with different abilities
- Developing more employment and vocational programs
- Creating additional recreational opportunities
- Building partnerships with local businesses for community integration
