Some days at Lennon’s House are loud and full of energy. This wasn’t one of those days, and that’s exactly what made it special.
One of our staff members took a new 1:1 member out for a hike on the trails near Rockaway. No big group, no schedule to keep. Just two people walking through the woods on a clear afternoon.
The trail was quiet. Leaves crunching, birds doing their thing. They walked at an easy pace and didn’t rush. For someone just getting started with us, that kind of calm goes a long way. No pressure to talk if you don’t want to. No need to perform or keep up with a crowd. Just fresh air and a little bit of trust building, one step at a time.
And if you looked out far enough from the ridge, you could see the New York City skyline. It’s one of those views that catches you off guard when you’re standing in the middle of the woods in Morris County.
Our 1:1 program is how we usually welcome new members to Lennon’s House. Before jumping into group activities, we spend time one-on-one so people can get comfortable at their own pace. Sometimes that means hiking. Sometimes it’s something else entirely. It depends on the person, and that’s the whole point.
It was a good day. A simple one. And sometimes those are the ones that stick with you.
